A Youth’s Perspective on Life Coaching

Have you ever thought about the impact you could have by mentoring a young person in foster care? Being a stable, supportive influence when many foster youth don’t have anyone can affect their choices and mindset so much. Below is an example of the impact life coaches have had on teens

A word from "J"

The first is “J”.  He says, “I had no one in my life and when I turned 18, I felt lost.  I needed an ID and didn’t know how to get one.  I didn’t know where to get my paperwork to get one.  I wanted to enroll in school and get a job, but I couldn’t without an ID.  I ended up recommitting myself to the state.”

When a teen recommits to the state, they agree to stay in state’s care for an additional period after turning 18.  This allows them to still have housing and food provided to them. J went on to say that it was during this time he met a few adults who got to know him and began helping him figure out life as an adult.  Not only did they help practically, they also helped him think through decisions, actions, and consequences.

“I don’t think a lot of kids understand the gravity of their actions and consequences until it’s too late,” he says.  “So many kids in the system like me aren’t bad, just misguided and in need of someone to help them.” J credits his support circle for not only helping him get on his feet after leaving state’s care, but also keeping him accountable for his actions and staying on the right path.  He knew he could go to them if he needed help or was struggling.  Without them, he says he isn’t sure if he would be where he is now.

The Impact of a Life Coach

Today, J has a job, has been taking college courses, and is enjoying life.  He knows there will be bumps along the way and it won’t always be easy, but he is determined to make different choices than he has seen his friends make.

This is the impact that life coaches can have.  By being there for youth in need and helping them as they figure out adulthood, you can be part of their success story.  All it takes is a willing heart to step in.
