What does it mean to be a ‘spotter’ for foster youth?
Spotters are used by weightlifters to encourage them and protect them as they grow stronger. They stand beside the athlete and assist, if and when, necessary.
In life, we all need “spotters” from time to time.
Think about it – when someone stands by your side through the difficult times, does it make a difference? For youth in foster care, the difference can be transformational.
After years of instability or broken promises, trust can feel risky. But when a mentor shows up again and again with love, patience, and belief, a young person begins to see hope for their future.
That’s what OCA’s Life Coaches do: they walk with youth through the ups and downs of daily life. Sometimes, it’s helping set goals or learning a new skill. Sometimes, it’s as simple as being a steady presence when everything else feels uncertain.
Evidence shows that consistent coaching relationships lead to real changes: greater success in education and work, reduced risk of homelessness, and stronger emotional health. But beyond the data is the simple truth that steady, faithful love restores dignity and builds resilience.
Galatians 6:2 reminds us: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Will you be a spotter for a foster youth in your community?
That’s the calling of a Life Coach—lifting the weight just enough so a young person can take the next step forward or simply standing by their side to encourage them.
Throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana, there are young people weighed down by their past waiting for someone to stand by their side and show them the future that God has for them. Will you be their “spotter” so that they can grow into the man or woman God wants them to be?
