When the truth of what God the Father has done for us through His Son, to adopt us into His family, is made known to us by the Holy Spirit, the inevitable response is an outpouring of gratitude in sacrificial love and service to others.
Even after this glorious adoption, one tendency of our old sinful natures that often stifles this outpouring is comparing ourselves to others, what their service looks like, and concluding that what we have to offer is of little value.
One Body of Christ
Knowing this tendency, the apostle Paul encourages us with these words:
“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Romans 12:3-8)
Paul’s emphasis on avoiding pride and, just like many members of a physical body, embracing the seemingly small role you are able to fulfill in the body of Christ is precisely what countless families in our own neighborhoods need. There are families at this very moment, possibly even right next door to you as you read this, that are in dire need of basic and sometimes not so basic assistance.
From a family needing furniture because they just grew unexpectedly overnight due to heart-wrenching circumstances to a single parent who is struggling to maintain a safe living environment for their kids due to neglected household maintenance, the needs are varied yet all important.
Gateway: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself
As Jesus Himself taught, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and OCA Gateway provides an accessible and targeted opportunity for Christ-loving members to do that in a practical way. Utilizing an online portal, Social Workers are able to identify families in need and an intuitive search function enables compassionate individuals and churches to locate and meet those needs in specific locations.
If you feel compelled to demonstrate Christ-like love to a family who is on the verge of or in the midst of crisis, please click here and see the needs you can meet. If there are no needs that you can personally meet, please feel free to share with others so another member of this glorious body of Christ can come alongside you in showing the world that hope has a name, Jesus.
