“You were born with the ability to change someone’s life. Don’t ever waste it.”

-Anonymous.

We love to spotlight our volunteers here at OCA because we love seeing fellow brothers and sisters doing Christ’s work!

Galatians 5:13 says, You, my brothers and sisters were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather to serve one another humbly in love.

Life coaches serve a key role in the lives of vulnerable youth. “Our life coaches are equipped to walk alongside them, encourage and support them. On a very basic level, the life coaches are meeting the need to offer the youth an opportunity to have one positive, healthy adult relationship. Many of the young people we match don’t have any adults in their lives who aren’t being paid to spend time with them. They have caseworkers, therapists, etc. Our Life Coaches are unique in that they are there completely voluntarily,” OCA Life Coaching Director, Beth Pace said.

Allison Chesser is Stephanie’s life coach. After interacting with Stephanie and Allison for just a short period of time I could tell that it was a great match. Both are so sweet and soft spoken which makes for a natural friendship. Allison explained that she and Stephanie have only known each other for a little bit but that she has seen her open up and be more talkative than in the beginning.

I think that is the biggest thing to remember with ministry, everything is a process and you may not get to see the seed grow, but you will have planted it and watered it. You may not get to see the change in the person you are pouring into but that is the beauty in ministry. It stretches you to show grace to someone when you want for them so badly to make that change so they can realize and unlock their potential. I think life coaching is such a beautiful picture of being Jesus to someone who needs Him. Allison has already gotten to see Stephanie be real with her.

Stephanie has shared some hopes that she has for herself as she grows up. Allison said, “It is rewarding to help her see that path as something she can actually pursue.” Allison told me that she gives Stephanie tips when thinking about the plans she wants to happen in the future. “I try my best to give her real-life examples of well-known successful people that also practice that same habit, or ways in which that line of thinking can be helpful in the future. Having the right mindset is the starting point for so many things in life.”

After catching a glimpse into what it is like being a life coach, just imagine how God could use YOU to help make an impact for His kingdom. We all have a part to play. Some plan the seeds, others water, some get to see the work come to fruitaton. The beauty of ministry is that it stretches us to show grace to someone and meet them where they are. Could you be the one positive adult in the life of a young person in foster care?
