Social Workers Are Leaders, Advocates, and Champions

Every March we celebrate and support the National Professional Social Work Month and this year’s theme is “leaders. advocates. champions.” While the whole month of March is set aside as National Social Work Month, today, March 20th, is World Social Work Day! We celebrate with Social Workers today, and every day, especially the ones we work with on a daily basis in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Social Workers Are Leaders, Advocates, and Champions

2018 marks 35 years since the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) first began setting aside one day a year that Social Workers from around the world come together and celebrate the work they’re doing. For the past two years, the IFSW has been focusing on their theme of “Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability.” Join us today in celebrating Social Workers who commit to their job around the clock all year to create better communities.

35 Years Of Celebrating World Social Work Day

Today is a special day for Social Workers and we can’t help but join with them in celebrating them and spotlighting their profession and the contributions they make to Orphan Care Alliance, Kentuckiana, the United States, and the world.

There are around 650,000 social workers throughout the United States with the most working with children and families. While there are many fields a social worker can choose to work in, a characteristic that transcends all fields is working around the clock to meet the basic needs of vulnerable citizens in their communities. These are just a few words that describe all social workers: integrity, courage, relentless, innovative, dependable, and committed.

We are thankful for these social workers who dedicate themselves to this work and helping organizations and missions like ours. Our mission is to “equip Christians and connect them to opportunities to care for the fatherless.” This isn’t an easy mission and it’s the social workers and volunteers we work with who help us in accomplishing this.

Social workers work towards a special vision of a world where everyone has equal access to the same resources and opportunities that will allow them to meet their basic needs, which will then allow them to work towards their dreams, goals, and creating the future they want to have. As such, social workers confront some of the most challenging issues (like gun control and affordable housing) facing individuals and families in their communities and innovate solutions that help the most vulnerable meet their basic needs.

National Social Work Month 2018

In the United States, Social Workers across the nation have been celebrating this year’s national theme of “leaders. advocates. champions” all throughout March. This year’s campaign is informing the public about the past and present role of social workers as they help improve the lives of the most vulnerable people in their communities.

The biggest way you can show your appreciation is coming alongside organizations they work for and lobby for causes that your values align with. Simply by realizing the need of Social Workers and this year’s theme is a great place to start.
