This is part 3 of our continuing April blog series on Safe Harbor. Last week we heard from one of our Care Families, the Bernardsand before that, we wrote about how The Harvest Is Plenty. This week, we will hear a unique perspective from the family the Bernards serve. We hope you enjoy learning more about this life-changing ministry.
God Shows Up On Time, Every Time
If someone had told me ten years ago that I would be raising a young child at my age, I would have told them they were crazy! Yet, here I am in my 50’s trying to raise a little boy. While I love this little guy dearly, it has not been easy. I have been unable to work due to ongoing medical issues that at times, make even the simplest of tasks very painful. The financial stress coupled with the physical issues makes parenting an active 7-year-old boy very difficult, but when that child has also suffered trauma, it can be nearly impossible.
My grandson came to live with me three years ago as a very frightened, hurt, and angry little boy. As such, he struggled with trust issues and constant meltdowns that even if I were healthy and 20 years younger would be difficult to handle. Because of our situation, we have been fairly isolated the last few years, which only added to our feelings of hopelessness and depression. Things got so bad at one point, I was afraid I had no choice but to surrender my grandchild to the state because I could no longer care for him. That’s when God showed up!
Last summer when things were at their lowest, I was introduced to the Safe Harbor program. When I first heard about it, I truly didn’t know what to expect, but I was willing to try anything to keep my grandson and try to get our lives back on track. The first day that I met our Care Family, the Bernards, I knew Safe Harbor was a God thing! I liked them right away and I could see what caring and loving people they are.
Safe Harbor Is An Answered Prayer
These past months working with Safe Harbor and the Bernard family have brought so many positive changes into our lives. Michelle and Hanson Bernard have been so nurturing and patient with my grandson and have taught him to trust and open himself up to others again. Hanson has shown him what a real man should be like and how a man should treat his wife and children. Michelle has brought such a sweet tenderness into his life in the way she cares for him, even when he struggles, and the Bernard children have welcomed him like a brother.
My grandson still struggles at times with the hurts from his past, but real healing is taking place and the change is obvious. He is much happier and more confident, he is doing well in school and while he does still have meltdowns, they are less frequent.
The Safe Harbor program has not only helped my grandson, but it has helped me as well. It has given me the opportunity to have time to concentrate on my health and helped me to overcome my feelings of isolation and hopelessness. For the first time in a long time, I feel valued as a person and I feel respected. I found me again!
My grandson and I still have some hurdles to overcome, but because of the relationships we have built through Safe Harbor we now know we don’t have to do it alone. God really does answer prayers!
